THE GOODIE BAG.

November 24, 2009

Over the past few weeks I have been in contact with Peter of The Goodie Bag and he was kind enough to interview me on the development of Airtime and how things came to be. Instead of just stopping there, I wanted to see what his company was all about and take a closer look into a different side of the streetwear industry where high involvement, collaboration, and event planning is the name of the game. This guy does the grunt work and is very good at it too.

Tell me a little about yourself, who you are and what is your company?

Peter Coultas, owner of The Goodie Bag (http://www.thegoodiebag.ca | http://thegoodiebag.wordpress.com).

How did you get into the industry?

I’ve always been into fashion and sneakers. About 3 years ago, I started collecting sneakers heavily. Through connections I developed through sneaker collecting things just sort of grew from there.

What is the most memorable moment in your career to date?

Hmm, that’s a tough one. I can’t really say that there’s been a most defining or memorable moment, but just being able to work with the people and brands that I’m working with is an honour. Through networking I’ve been able to work with many rappers including Lil Wayne, Mack Maine, Lil Chuckee, Cory Gunz, Harlem’s Cash, and with well-respected OG’s in the fashion industry.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Probably two parts really. The collaborative part where I get to put in my two cents with brands on what I think will help them grow. The real favourite is when we’re in the middle of a sales push for this order date or that. When I check my inbox and it’s just order, after order, after order. It’s such a good feeling. Not because of money or greed. But because it’s proof. When you don’t work with your hands, you run the risk of not getting to actually see the value of your work. Those e-mails in the inbox are tangible proof of hard work, and being on the right track. Love it.

What are your plans for the future?

Continue to grow my business organically and help my brands grow and succeed. I plan to get involved with a lot more music, lifestyle events, release parties, etc.

Peter has been very busy as of late, and his upcoming project Leaders of The New Cool features artists from Dom Cannon to Spree Wilson so if you are in the area make sure to check it out.

BAD SERVICE.

October 25, 2009

Directly in line with our brand concept are the inner workings and culture surrounding radio. Mr. Pat Welby is all too familiar with this medium and through his connection and experience we have merged the two worlds to produce the mixtape below. Beyond that point you can get a taste of what Welby does behind the mic through Radio Depaul's Podcast. He is on the air Sunday nights from 6-9 and usually brings in a few featured artists for interviews.

I had the opportunity to hop on with him last week to talk through a few things about the line and where we come from so check that out as well as an exclusive interview with Nero HERE.

Hope all is well out there. Be sure to support our cause and pick up a few things from the shop!

THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE.

October 12, 2009

As you know, our collection is made up of influences that come from all directions. Whether it is drawn from history, music, or just our everyday life, we feel the most interesting way to build our brand is by making all these influences relative. Marshall Mcluhan was an incredible philosopher and highly regarded scholar who formed the basic theories and mindsets surrounding the media industry. Like Mr. Murrow, he played a large role is the evolution of media and we feel his message fits directly with our mission as a clothing company.

Two of his most famous concepts are reflected in parts of our new season set to release this week. The first is his quote: "The medium is the message" which we take as The Airtime Collection serving as the new medium for the streetwear industry and the message being our brand concept and ideas.

Second is Mcluhan's construction of the tetrad of media. This is a diagram that lays out the effects of a medium (TV, radio, internet) on the audience, but we understand this concept better as it pertains to the effect of ARTM serving as the medium.

The wait is over. Duck and Cover.

NOW FEATURING.

September 29, 2009

Since the start of this company, I have had a few people send me ideas, artowork, and suggestions for the line. It has been incredible to see different interpretations of the brand from talented artisits around the country and is by far one of my favorite things about running a clothing company.

This first work was done by Matthew Rieser who is the Nike and Apple Rep on our campus and a very close friend of mine. He took the time to put this piece together and I think it came out pretty dope. He calls it "AppTime."

This second submition is from my boy Des1 out of NY who has been kicking out some unreal pieces of art for the past few years and was kind enough to send me a few designs. Keep an eye out for this dude.

BLOODBATH.

September 17, 2009

Bloodbath is bringing a new angle to the streetwear game yet keeping things solid, traditional, and simple. The lookbook is brilliantly shot and only assists in showing the power behind this brand. If you haven't heard of them yet, you will soon. Keep an eye out for these guys because they have something very special.

SUBTLE GENIUS.

September 14, 2009

As you might have seen in earlier blog posts, Edward Murrow has been a focal point for our brand for many reasons but I wanted to give you a little more depth into why and how he has shaped our direction here at The Airtime Collection.

Murrow started to gain fame in 1938 as a CBS broadcaster who went about things a different way than most at the time. He was never afraid to speak what he truly thought and disregarded the stagnate direction that most CBS execs were pushing at the time. He reported live on site during WWII and gave listeners a true look at what was going on worlds away.

Murrow was a man of subtle genius. He had one of the most methodical and memorizing deliverys and his ability to vividly portray his message purely through his choice of words and incredible cadence provided a necesary voice for the American people at a time when they needed it most.

Many of his quotes can be found throughout our collection but this quote below is one of my favorites:

"If we confuse dissent with disloyalty — if we deny the right of the individual to be wrong, unpopular, eccentric or unorthodox — if we deny the essence of racial equality, then hundreds of millions in Asia and Africa who are shopping about for a new allegiance will conclude that we are concerned to defend a myth and our present privileged status. Every act that denies or limits the freedom of the individual in this country costs us the. . . confidence of men and women who aspire to that freedom and independence of which we speak and for which our ancestors fought."

If you have time to take a deeper look into who he was and how he revolutionized radio, I highly suggest it.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
